Sewing Starter Activity with Conversation Prompts – Enjoy creating conversations and encouraging activity.
Some people may find it difficult to join in activities [i.e. card making / crafting / Bingo or board games]. It’s important to help people maintain skills and remain engaged. that’s why Happy Days has created a collection of materials to help people stay engaged and sustain skills.
‘Some years ago, visiting a dedicated dementia care home in Lancashire, Sue and I took along some simple materials for people to engage with which included juggling balls, bubbles, knitting doll, crochet mat, pin cushion … We discovered that four of the ladies could knit. The care team hadn’t been aware of this and were really pleased to find out which prompted them to form a knitting circle for the ladies, visitors and other residents who wished to join in. Prompting conversations with physical items is a powerful way to learn about the person you are caring for, especially if that person is living with dementia and may not be able to recall pastimes they are interested in. Collating nostalgic, tactile and meaningful materials takes time – that why, at Happy Days, we have prepared the widest range of themed materials in the UK to help care teams engage and enjoy enriching social care for improved well-being.’ Gillian Hesketh
